History

In 1904
In 1904, the predecessor of CIFIAL, Industrial de Ferragens, Lda, CIF, was established and owned by Alberto CostaReis, also known as O Biscat ã o (The Big Oddjob). At that time, the factory used basic tools to produce pins, locks, hinges, safes, and some metal items. -
1940s
The period before World War II was a time of severe financial difficulties for the company, and after bankruptcy, CIF was taken over by Banco Borges&Irm ã o. In 1944, the company was acquired by Jos é Marques from the bank, and CIFIAL was born. Jos é Marques is the son of a carpenter from a humble background, having never even attended elementary school. But he inherited his professional ethics, discipline, and honor from his father, which led him to work on lathes in Biscat ã o from 1920 to 1922. -

1960s
With extraordinary intelligence and sensitivity, Jos é Marques continuously develops and modernizes the factory, creating conditions for its progress and paving the way for future internationalization. When a new stage of modernization is underway, the company takes the first step towards automation. In June 1961, a new edition of "Portuguese Industrial History" was published, focusing on the history of CIFIAL and describing its first 50 years. The entire book includes a paragraph explaining how CIF became CIFIAL (Portuguese to be translated): The most popular locks in our country were American Yall locks. It is a lock of advanced technique and for this reason has been reproduced in many parts of Europe and particularly in Portugal where with other refinements are manufactured in large quantities. O Centro Industrial de Ferragens, Lda., of Rio Meão, using the very initials of the firm, CIF, which joined the name of the locks "Yall", created the CIFIAL brand because its locks are known and that they would raise such a reputation.
